My Mobile Computer Kit

Here’s my complete mobile computer kit: Nokia N800, Think Outside Bluetooth keyboard, and Asus Portable 802.11 g WiFi Access Point – all carried in an old Rhinoskin carrying case (I don’t even know if it’s made anymore). It’s everything I need for Web browsing, email, RSS, IM, video and VOIP calls, streaming audio, podcasts, eBook and PDF reading, meeting notes, and Google Maps.

How does the Treo 700p fit into all of this?

You’re correct, I should have included my Treo 700p in the picture and commentary. It’s a vital part of my mobile kit.

I guess I didn’t include it in the picture because the Treo lives in my pants pocket and not my Rhinoskin carrying case. My N800 connects out to the Internet through a Bluetooth connection with the Treo whenever WiFi isn’t available. With the EV-DO service the Treo provides performance is almost as good as a WiFi connection.

I too have a Treo700p (Sprint EVDO), a Nokia n800, and–coincidentally–a ThinkOutide BT keyboard. The n800 is the newest of the lot. I got tired of taking my laptop on overnight work trips, but wanted to be able to comfortably remote access my PC from a hotel room. Other than pairing, however, I haven’t managed to get my n800 and 700p to speak with each other as an EVDO BT modem. Any chance you could share how you managed to configure the connection?

You’ve got to pay Sprint to enable DUN (dial-up networking) on your phone. If you’re already paying for it and it doesn’t work then you should contact your local Sprint store.

That’s a shame. Because it’s so rare that I need it, I use PDANet on my Treo and laptop now for that purpose. It’s a very nice insurance policy and makes my current EVDO package well worthwhile, but I don’t think I want to sign up for a more expensive service and extend my contract just for occasional use.
