Melodis Voice Dialer for iPhone

December 17, 2008

Voice dialing is a function provided with many smartphones, but it isn’t a function that is natively available on the iPhone. Now, however, there is a free application that provides this function, and does it with amazing accuracy: the Melodis Voice Dialer. I’ve found it to be completely accurate in understanding my voice input and am frankly amazed that it’s available for free. If you want to add voice dialing to your iPhone, be sure to check out this wonderful application.

Street View Comes to Charleston, WV

The street view function in Google Maps has recently become available for the Charleston, WV area. The picture above shows the street on which I live (although you can’t actually see my house) as it appears on my iPhone. Amazing!

Billy’s Closes!

December 9, 2008

Billy’s, the wonderful new restaurant off Corridor G and near the Southridge Center, closed yesterday. Only open since July, we had only just gotten around to eating there for the first time this past weekend. My girlfriend and I absolutely loved the place and vowed to return frequently, but alas, that will no longer be possible. This is a real loss to the Charleston, WV restaurant scene and a sad commentary on what tough economic times we face today. Goodbye, Billy’s, we’ll really miss you!

Amazon Mobile for iPhone/Touch

December 3, 2008

Amazon Mobile is a new application for the iPhone/Touch. In addition to providing just about all the functionality available through their normal Web interface, it offers a very interesting new feature: Amazon Remembers. This feature allows you to use the iPhone camera to snap a picture of a product in which you are interested. The photos are stored in the application and on Amazon’s server. Amazon will try and find a product that matches your photo and will send you an email alert about it. Amazing!

Brothers in Arms Available for iPhone/Touch

December 2, 2008

A very sophisticated WWII-themed first person shooter game is now available for the iPhone/Touch: Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heros. I just downloaded it and haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but it looks like an iPhone/Touch game that can provide as much fun as Call of Duty and Medal of Honor do on a PC. I’ll let you know what I think of it after I have a chance to put some playing time into it.

Google Maps Traffic Info on the iPhone

December 1, 2008

Living in the Charleston, WV area means that I don’t have to deal with traffic congestion. However, this past week I was in Northern VA, where traffic congestion is a way of life. So I got to use and appreciate the traffic reporting feature in my iPhone’s built-in Map application for the first time. As you can see, Interstate 95 was actually in very good shape on the morning of the day after Thanksgiving.
