It’s A Small World!

August 29, 2008

This evening I got to meet Reggie Suplido. Reggie is the man behind two very key mobile computing Web sites that I’ve visited in the past – 1SRC: which was a blog I regularly visited when I was a Palm Treo owner, and Internet Tablet Talk: the premier Nokia Internet Tablet forum that I visited every single day when I was an N800 user. I had no idea he lived only a few miles from my house here in WV!

Reggie also did a brief write up of our meeting on his /mobility Web site.

Can This Really Be The End?

November 2, 2007

Close observers will notice a change in the heading of this blog: no longer does it mention the Nokia N800. That’s right, I’ve retired this little computer from active service and am looking for a good home for it right now. Over two months experience with my Kohjinsha SH6 has shown me that this UMPC has made the Nokia N800 completely superfluous to my computing needs. The N800 is a great little computer – I just don’t need it anymore!

On Vacation

October 19, 2007

My wife and I have been on vacation all this week. We’re staying at a wonderful resort in the mountains of West Viriginia. The picture above was taken right from our balcony – we definitely have a million dollar view of the mountains and forest here!

So far we’ve visited the Green Bank Radio Observatory, Seneca Rocks, and the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park – in addition to reading, playing games, napping, and eating at the resort: which features one of the finest restaurants I’ve ever eaten in.

I brought both my Konjinsha SH6 (used to create this posting) and my Nokia N800 along with me on this trip. So far the N800 remains unused in my travel bag. Can this really spell the end to my use of it? I’m starting to feel that all I need for truly portable computing is my SH6 and that the N800 is now superfluous to me. Who would have guessed that a few months ago?

As a result I have no interest in the new N810, which seems to be a very nice evolutionary improvement over the N800. Well back to napping!

The Internet Tablet School looks like a great resource for new N800 owners.

My N800 Hasn’t Been Completely Replaced Yet!

September 5, 2007

Yesterday I left a posting here saying that my SH6 has replaced my N800. Well, it turns out that’s not completely true. I don’t use my N800 in the house anymore to surf the Web or check email, but today I had to leave the house for a shopping trip with my wife.  I needed to stay in touch with my work email so my Treo alone wouldn’t be adequate (it can’t handle Outlook Web Access). So the choice was between my SH6 and my N800.

I took the N800 with me. Why? Because it fit into the pocket of my shorts. Carrying the SH6 would have meant taking it along in some kind of bag which seemed more trouble than it was worth just for checking email. So it looks like the N800 has some life left in it yet!

SH6 Status Report

September 4, 2007

Well I’ve had my Kohjinsha SH6 for over a week now and here are some more thoughts on it:

  1. I’ve only found one problem with it – apparently the keyboard driver that Dynamism installed on it has a slight bug: if you hit the Caps Lock key it gets stuck in Caps Lock mode and you have to reboot to get out of it. I just sent email to Dynamism today and I’m anxious to see how they respond to this bug report.
  2. It’s definitely replaced my Electrovaya SC-3000 Tablet PC; in fact, I’ve given my Tablet to my wife!
  3. A bit of a surprise for me: it’s also replaced my Nokia N800. I haven’t even turned on my N800 for days now. When not being used, my SH6 sits on top of a book shelf in our living room where my N800 used to sit. The SH6 is normally in sleep mode with the screen closed over the keyboard. When I want to do something on the Web I just grab it, pull back the screen, and I’m surfing the Web in seconds. It’s just as convenient as the N800, but lots more powerful.

No Joy in Da House

August 24, 2007

Well Fedex failed to deliver my SH6 today, claiming weather delayed many of their flights. Now they are saying I may get it tomorrow or maybe MONDAY! Since I’m leaving for Indianapolis early Monday morning, a Monday delivery would mean that I won’t get my hands on it until next Friday. Whoa is me!

Using VNC Server on the Nokia N800

August 22, 2007

Here’s a brief, concise posting on using the X11VNC server on an N800 and the function key shortcuts that become available. Actually these same shortcuts work with a Bluetooth keyboard, too.

Jee K. Lee has created what has to be the most complete and detailed N800 review ever. It’s in two parts: Part 1 and Part 2.
